Who is WORMbox?
Did you know?Along with the City Worms, the WORMbox is one of the very first worm composters made in France for composting right in your kitchen.
Moutta Farm has been raising composting worms in the Béarn region since 2007. To help everyone recycle their food scraps at home, the farm designed its own worm composter: the WORMbox. The WORMbox's design and trays draw on more than 15 years of vermicomposting experience.
The WORMbox worm composter is made in France, in the Landes region. The black parts are made from recycled and recyclable plastic. The WORMbox lid lifts off with one hand and hooks onto the edge of the tray. The worms move up from one WORMbox tray to the next, drawn by the fresh food scraps, and you harvest the vermicompost from the bottom.
For larger volumes, the WORMbox 240 Collective, also made in France, processes about 880 lb (400 kg) of organic waste a year thanks to its silo system. All WORMbox replacement parts are available: tray, lid, planter, wheels, and spigot. The WORMbox worm composter comes with a 10-year warranty, and the WORMbox 240 Collective with a 2-year warranty.
Questions about WORMbox products
How many trays should I choose for my WORMbox?
Plan on 2 to 3 trays for 2 to 3 people, and 4 to 5 trays for a larger family or one that cooks a lot. Each WORMbox tray offers 3.4 gallons (13 liters) of usable space. There's no need to buy everything up front: you can add a WORMbox tray later, up to 5 trays in total.
Are the worms included with the WORMbox?
No, the Eisenia composting worms are sold separately. We recommend 8.8 oz (250 g) of worms for 1 to 2 people, 1.1 lb (500 g) for 3 to 4 people, and 2.2 lb (1 kg) or more for larger households. To cover the active tray of the WORMbox, add a round hemp mat, cut to fit the WORMbox.
WORMbox or WORMbox 240: which one should I choose?
The WORMbox worm composter with stacking trays is designed for a single household and indoor use. The WORMbox 240 community composter is made for apartment buildings, restaurants, cafeterias, and businesses: it processes around 880 lb (400 kg) of food scraps a year, the equivalent of 5 to 10 households. The WORMbox 240 kit comes with 4.4 lb (2 kg) of worms and everything you need to get started.
Can I add a planter to a WORMbox?
Yes, the WORMbox planter replaces the lid and lets you grow plants or herbs on top of your worm composter. You can choose it when you order your WORMbox or add it later.
