Designed and made in France, this hemp mat, or high-density moisture pad (3.3 oz/ft² (1000 g/m²), about 0.2 in (5–6 mm) thick), is specially designed to retain moisture in the top tray of your worm composter, where the worms are most active. It sits directly on the worms in the active tray (the top tray), keeping them comfortable and productive.
Benefits and use:
Retains moisture: keeps the top layer damp so your composting worms stay active and efficient.
Encourages worm movement: lets the worms come up to the surface to feed and break down food scraps faster.
Protection from cold and temperature swings: provides a stable environment for your worms and food scraps.
Limits insect growth: reduces outbreaks of fruit flies and other pests.
Eco-friendly and degradable: 100% natural, the mat breaks down over time and can be eaten by the worms.
Handy tip: lightly soak the mat with WORMboost diluted in water to boost worm activity.
The round 15.7 in (40 cm) diameter size fits the following worm composters: WORMbox, Eco-Worms, Can-O-Worms.
The hemp mat is the must-have accessory for keeping your worm bin running efficiently, protecting your worms, improving compost quality, and keeping pests at bay, all naturally and sustainably.

Your questions about the Round hemp mat
The farm's answers to the questions our customers ask us most often.
The round hemp mat, 15.7 in (40 cm) in diameter, is cut to fit WORMbox, Eco-Worms, and Can-O-Worms worm bins. It sits right in the active tray as is, with no cutting needed.
The round mat is available individually or in packs of 5 or 10. Since a mat lasts 2 to 3 months on average, the packs make sure you never run out. Our customers rate it 4.71/5 from 51 reviews, and several mention that it helps keep fruit flies and fungus gnats at bay. For a different model, check out our square, rectangular, or oval mats, or the XXL mat you can cut to size.
In your WORMbox, Eco-Worms, or Can-O-Worms, the round mat acts as a blanket laid over the fresh food scraps. It keeps the surface moist, shields the worms from light, and limits access for fruit flies. The worms also love to shelter and breed underneath it.
The round hemp mat isn't required: brown cardboard, changed often, or an old 100% cotton floor rag can take its place. Our high-density hemp mat (29.5 oz/yd² (1000 g/m²), 0.20–0.24 in (5–6 mm) thick) is 100% natural and is designed and made in France.
Yes, they love it! In your WORMbox, Eco-Worms, or Can-O-Worms, the round hemp mat keeps the surface cool and moist: the worms come up under the mat to feed and break down fresh food scraps faster.
It's also one of their favorite places to lay eggs: you'll spot small yellowish cocoons there, a sign of a thriving colony. The round mat protects them from the cold and from temperature swings. And because it's 100% natural, your worms even end up nibbling on it.
Lay the round hemp mat flat, directly on the worms and food scraps in the top tray, just beneath the lid. Food always goes underneath it: lift the mat, add your peels and cardboard, then put it back in place.
There's no need to wet it: it goes in dry and soaks up the moisture released by the food scraps. To give your worms a boost, you can spray it from time to time with diluted WORMboost (2 to 3 capfuls in 8.5 fl oz (¼ liter) of water).
When your first tray is three-quarters full, add a new one on top and move the round mat up into it: it always stays in the active tray, the one you're feeding. One mat is all you need for the whole worm composter.
If you put the WORMbox planter on in place of the lid, remove the mat: you won't need it anymore, because the plant roots absorb the excess moisture from the tray below on their own.
For the round hemp mat, expect it to last 2 to 3 months on average, sometimes longer: it depends on the moisture level and how hungry your colony is. Hemp is meant to be nibbled, so it's normal to see it thin out and develop holes.
When it's almost gone, lay the new disc directly on top: the old one may still hold cocoons, and the worms will finish eating it. If it's still thick, crumble it up a bit and mix it into the food scraps. Packs of 5 or 10 round mats ensure you always have a spare on hand for your WORMbox.

I've been using this hemp mat since my worms arrived 15 days ago. I'm squeamish about touching them, so I really like having the hemp mat to put over the peelings, and the worms seem to like it too.

I think the hemp mat is really good. It covers the food well, keeps the moisture in and ends up in the worms' bellies, so there's no waste!! I recommend it
Je trouve que le tapis de chanvre est vraiment bien. Il couvre bien la nourriture, garde l'humidité et termine dans le ventre des lombrics donc pas de gaspillage ! ! Je recommande

A must when you buy a worm composter, to absorb the moisture. Change it from time to time! It also helps reduce worm escapes at the beginning!

Hemp mats22/10/2026

Hello, I have had my worm composter for many years and I have always bought all my accessories from Moutta Farm, which has always given me great satisfaction, but now, how can I put it... I am very disappointed. The hemp mats I received are nothing like the ones from the beginning! Before, I could lift them very easily for more than a month without any problem to add my peelings, but now, after 15 days, they fall apart between my fingers in no time. Or else, another possibility, my worms have mutated and become "hemp-eaters" +++ No, seriously, I am quite disappointed, and your email arrives at just the right time, because I was thinking of calling you. On the other hand, still no problem with fungus gnats, and they still retain moisture very well. Then again, it's true that, as the price has never changed, maybe the density of the mat is lower... Kind regards Christine
Cordialement Christine
Reply from Moutta Farm Thank you for your loyalty to Moutta Farm and for your feedback.
Our hemp mats are approximately 5 to 6 mm thick. It is possible that your worms are attacking them more than before. In principle, compost worms prefer to feed on decomposing organic matter, particularly fruit and vegetable peelings, rather than on the hemp mat itself.
If your worms are particularly active or if other food inputs are insufficient, they may contribute to the breakdown of the mat, which could explain why it disintegrates more quickly.
Nevertheless, we have taken note of your comment regarding the difference in durability compared with the mats you used previously, and we thank you for pointing it out.
We are delighted to hear that you still have no problem with gnats and that the mats retain moisture well, and we hope you will continue to be satisfied with your worm composter.

Good, even though I find it wears out very quickly… It limits fungus gnats a little It doesn't stop the worms from getting out at all, since they go right through it On the other hand, it really keeps the moisture in well
Bien Bien même si je trouve qu’il s’use très vite… Ça limite un peu les moucherons Ça n’empêche pas du tout les vers de sortir puisqu’ils passent à travers Par contre ça garde vraiment bien l’humidité
Reply from Moutta Farm Thank you for your feedback! The hemp mat is indeed very effective at retaining moisture and helps limit fungus gnats. Since it is made of natural fibres, it gradually breaks down through contact with moisture and the activity of the worms. As for worms passing through it, that is completely normal: the mat is not designed to stop them from getting out. Feel free to contact us.
