This kit includes all the essentials you need to get started with your 3.7-gallon (14-liter) Bokashi Confort composter.

Unlike traditional composting, Bokashi relies on a fermentation process (not decomposition). By adding a Bokashi activator made with effective microorganisms (EM), food scraps ferment quickly, with no odor and no pests.

Bokashi Confort in the kitchen

The word “bokashi” is a Japanese term meaning “fermented organic matter.” It is fermented by EM (friendly bacteria). These bacteria speed up the fermentation of the organic matter in the composter.

Bokashi has positive effects on soil: it enriches the earth, feeds your garden, and is good for the planet by reducing everyday waste. Composting with Bokashi is very simple. With its stylish design, discreet look, and compact size, it makes an ideal kitchen composter.

WHAT CAN I PUT IN THE COMPOSTER?

Allowed:
Food leftovers: fruits and vegetables,
Dairy products, meat, and fish bones,
Prepared foods: pizza, hamburgers, snacks, baked goods / cakes,
Other organic matter: coffee grounds.
Carbon-rich materials.

Not allowed:
Plastic, glass, metal, liquids, wood or wood shavings, ashes, sand, excrement.

Comes complete with:

  • 1 (or 2) Bokashi Confort 3.7-gallon (14-liter) composter,
  • 1 (or 2) strainer grid,
  • 1 (or 2) spigot,
  • 1 compactor,
  • 1 0.7 fl oz (20 mL) measuring cup for the Bokashi activator,
  • 1 bag (2.2 lb / 1 kg) of compost activator (EM) made by Moutta Farm,
  • 1 instruction guide.

Our high-fermentation Bokashi EM-1 activator is made right here at Moutta Farm!
Our ingredients are carefully selected, and we use the official EM-1 from Professor Teruo Higa, the renowned inventor of bokashi, to guarantee premium quality.
We use raw materials from our region: wheat bran from the Gers (32) and molasses from Béarn (64).

WHY TWO BOKASHI BUCKETS?
The advantage of the 2-bucket kit:

While fermentation is taking place in the first composter (for 15 days), the second one is available for your new food scraps (for the next 15 days).

We recommend using two Bokashi buckets. Once the first one is full, it must stay closed and rest for 2 weeks while the food scraps ferment. In the meantime, you can start filling the second bucket!

Bokashi with airtight closure
Bokashi Confort to turn your food scraps into compost

Benefits

This indoor composter has several advantages:

  • It has a spigot, so you can enjoy the benefits of compost without having to handle the waste.
  • The lid has a gasket and three latches, making it completely airtight.
  • Opening and closing it is very easy.
  • A holder on the back of the Bokashi lets you hang up the compactor.
  • Compact, stylish, and above all odor-free, this composter is designed to blend right into your home.

How it works:

  1. Put your cooked and uncooked food leftovers into the composter.
  2. Sprinkle with two tablespoons of Bokashi activator.
  3. Press down your food scraps with the included compactor to squeeze the air out of the organic matter.
  4. Always keep the lid closed: the less air, the better.
  5. Drain off the excess liquid using the spigot at the bottom of the composter.

When the bucket is full, empty the contents into a small hole or trench in your yard (or into your yard waste bin, a worm bin, or even take it to a drop-off center).

At this stage, the scraps will be fermented but not yet decomposed. They need to go into the soil to physically break down into humus (soil). Alternatively, you can add the organic matter from the bucket to your backyard compost bin. For best results, keep this organic matter covered with soil and other compostable materials.

Your questions about the Bokashi Confort

The farm's answers to the questions our customers ask us most often.

The Bokashi Confort holds 3.7 gallons (14 liters), a good balance between capacity and the space it takes up in your kitchen. You can buy it on its own or as a set of 2.

The set of 2 lets you rotate continuously: while the full bucket ferments for about 2 weeks, you fill the other one. Ideally, each bucket should be filled within 2 weeks at most, since that pace gives the best fermentation.

The Bokashi Confort kit contains everything you need to get started:

  • 1 bucket holding 3.7 gallons (14 liters), or 2 with the bundle, each with its own drainage grate and spigot;
  • 1 compactor, which hooks onto a holder on the back of the bucket;
  • 1 measuring scoop, 0.7 fl oz (20 ml);
  • 1 bag of 2.2 lb (1 kg) of Bokashi activator made by Moutta Farm;
  • 1 user guide.

The Bokashi Confort lid, with its seal and three latches, makes the bucket completely airtight.

The Bokashi Confort accepts your cooked or raw food scraps: vegetables, fruit, meat, fish and fish bones, dairy products, pizza, cakes, and coffee grounds. You can also add used tissues and paper towels. Small chicken bones are fine, but avoid larger ones because they don't break down well.

Do not add: liquids, ashes, excrement, sand, wood and wood shavings, or plastic, metal, and glass. The full chart of accepted and prohibited waste is on this page.

The Bokashi Confort comes ready to use, with a 0.7 fl oz (20 ml) measuring scoop and 2.2 lb (1 kg) of activator. To round out your setup:

Each time you add to the Bokashi Confort, add no more than 0.8 in (2 cm) of food scraps, then sprinkle the Bokashi activator in a thin layer over the entire surface and press down with the compactor to push out the air. Add your scraps as you go, without waiting until you have a lot.

Amount per addition: 1.4 fl oz (40 ml). Then fasten the three clips on the Bokashi Confort lid: it must stay airtight.

The juice from the Bokashi Confort drains through the built-in spigot at the bottom of the bucket, while the grid keeps the food scraps above the liquid. Drain it regularly. At first, or with dry scraps (paper towels, winter vegetables), it's normal to get very little.

Always use it diluted: about 3.4 fl oz (1 dl) of juice per 2.6-gallon (10-liter) watering can, once a month, since it's highly concentrated. One customer confirms it: "the flowers love the juice it makes."

Once it's full, keep the Bokashi Confort closed for about 2 weeks while it ferments; just keep opening the spigot to drain the liquid. The food scraps come out fermented but still whole. This is normal, since they finish breaking down in the soil. You have several options:

  • bury them in a hole or trench in your vegetable garden, then cover with a layer of soil;
  • add them to your backyard composter and cover them with other compostable materials;
  • add small amounts to a worm composter or a WORMacotta.

Yes, in small amounts, since the fermented contents of the Bokashi Confort are acidic. Check the pH first with test strips: your worms are happiest at around 7. Blended eggshells or RegulaWorm will raise a pH that's too low.

The right pace: small, regular additions mixed with cardboard, rather than a whole bucket at once. Your worms will benefit every time.

What happens to the pre-compost?: Buried in the gardenYour home: House with a yard

Practical for composting and burying organic waste in the vegetable garden.
I have two Bokashi bins for an optimal rotation.
One flaw: the lid is weak around the handle, and it broke.
Otherwise, an excellent start to composting. I'm thinking of soon switching to a rotating composter, which is more practical when you live in a house.

Model: Set of 2 bucketsWhat happens to the pre-compost?: Given to the worms
Automatic translation from French

Good, I only had some difficulties when, after letting the first bucket "mature" for 15 days, I gave the worms in the worm composter a good amount of its contents. The first time went fine, but from the 2nd or 3rd time (from the same bucket), some of the worms colonized the felt mat, and some became escapees again...
