EM® Bokashi Balls are clay balls enriched with effective microorganisms (EM®), designed to restore the biological balance in bodies of water and reduce sludge. Through gradual microbial action, these balls help clean ponds, water features, and water gardens while improving water quality and limiting the growth of algae and unwanted aquatic plants.

EM® Bokashi Balls - clay balls for ponds and water gardens

Each ball is made from a blend of fermented clay, EM® Bokashi, molasses, and EM® ceramic powder.

This natural combination promotes a healthy, sustainable aquatic environment and is completely safe for wildlife, plants, and pets. You can keep watering your vegetable garden or let your animals drink the treated water without any risk.

We do not recommend using pond balls in clean water, such as rain barrels, because the ball needs to break down in order to work. In that case, we recommend Maxi Tubes or Ceramic Rings instead.

Benefits

  • Reduces sludge and clears the water;
  • Prevents new sediment from building up;
  • Restores a healthy microbial balance for aquatic plants and wildlife;
  • Completely safe and natural to use.

These balls are a simple, natural, and effective way to maintain your ponds and water features, improving the health of your water while keeping sludge and algae in check.

Uses and Dosage

For a pond or water feature, we recommend applying:

  • 1 ball for every 10.8–21.5 sq ft (1–2 m²) of bottom surface per year;
  • Depending on how much sludge is already present, you can apply 1 to 2 balls per 10.8 sq ft (1 m²);
  • Treatment is ideally done in winter;
  • Can be combined with Microferm and EM® Photo+ for a complete green water treatment.

Just one application a year is all it takes to get visible, long-lasting results while maintaining an optimal biological balance in your pond.

EM® Bokashi Balls work gradually: the effective microorganisms ferment and break down accumulated organic matter, neutralize nitrate and ammonia residues, and restore the oxygen level needed for stable water balance.

You may notice some bubbling (degassing) in the weeks after adding the balls: any algae and organic matter that rise to the surface can be skimmed off and used as fertilizer or compost.

Your questions about the EM pond ball

The farm's answers to the questions our customers ask us most often.

Plan on 1 EM pond ball per 11–22 sq ft (1–2 m²) of pond bottom, per year. If there's already a lot of sludge, our product page recommends up to 1 to 2 balls per 10.8 sq ft (1 m²). Base your calculation on the surface area of the pond bottom, not the volume of water. Only one application per year is needed.

According to the manufacturer, yes, at the recommended dose: EM pond balls are made from natural ingredients (fermented clay, EM bokashi, molasses, and EM ceramic powder), and the treated water can still be used to water your vegetable garden or as drinking water for animals.

Over the following weeks, you may notice some degassing and debris rising to the surface: just skim it off and add it to your compost.

For a complete pond treatment, our product page recommends using EM pond balls together with Microferm and EM Photo+. The balls work on the bottom, where sludge settles, while EM Photo+ and Microferm work in the water.

Guideline from our EM Photo+ product page: 17 fl oz (0.5 L) of EM Photo+ and 2.6 gallons (10 L) of Microferm per 2,640 gallons (10,000 L) of water per year, in addition to the balls (1 to 2 per 10.8 sq ft (1 m²), preferably in winter).

Our product page recommends adding EM pond balls in winter, once a year. Simply toss the balls into the water, spreading them out across the pond. They gradually break down on the bottom. Before use, store them in a dry place, away from light, at 32–104 °F (0–40 °C).

No, we don't recommend it: in clean water, the pond ball breaks down in order to work, which isn't suitable for stored water. For a rain barrel, our product page recommends our Maxi Tubes or our EM ceramic rings instead. The balls are designed for garden ponds, larger ponds, and wildlife ponds that have sludge on the bottom.
