The best in outdoor, aerobic composting, without the effort!

A European exclusive from Moutta Farm: discover the premium 47.6-gallon (180-liter) rotating composter everyone is talking about. Designed to make composting simple while making it faster, cleaner, and more efficient, it’s revolutionizing the way you manage organic waste in your yard.

Say goodbye to old static composters at the back of the yard that are hard to turn and attract odors or pests. With the Maze rotating composter, there’s no need to turn your compost by hand or battle rodents.

180-liter rotating composter

Faster, effortless composting

Thanks to its patented geared crank rotation system, just a few regular turns are all it takes to fully aerate the contents. The result: compost that breaks down 2 to 3 times faster than in a traditional composter, given the right temperature conditions.

The ergonomic handle makes the drum easy to turn, while the gear ratchet automatically locks the rotation for safe, comfortable use.

Dual chambers: continuous composting

Its greatest strength lies in its two independent compartments.
When the first compartment is full, you start filling the second. While one is maturing, the other is being filled. Once the second is full, the first is ready to be emptied.

You never have to stop composting.

Multiple adjustable air vents promote optimal aerobic decomposition, limiting unpleasant odors and speeding up the transformation of waste into rich, balanced compost.

Benefits

  • Dual compartment with divider included,
  • Patented geared crank rotation system,
  • Ratchet lock to prevent backward rotation,
  • Sliding access doors,
  • Adjustable air vents,
  • High-density, UV-protected plastic,

Optional handy cart that slides under the composter

Optional: handy collection cart, designed to slide easily under the composter openings. It lets you collect and empty finished compost neatly, effortlessly, and without any mess. An ideal accessory to simplify harvesting your compost and carrying it to your yard or vegetable garden.

Easy compost harvest

The large sliding doors make it easy both to add scraps and to remove finished compost.
Generous clearance under the composter lets you easily slide in a bucket or cart for collection.

⚠️ Reminder: this composter works without composting worms.

Built to last, this composter is made from high-density, UV-protected plastic that stands up to the weather.

It sits on a corrosion-resistant tubular metal frame with zinc powder coating, and all of its hardware is stainless steel.

  • Rodent-proof,
  • Odor-proof,
  • Impact- and weather-resistant.

What can go in?

Yard and organic waste should be sorted into two main categories: “greens” and “browns,” also known as “soft” and “hard” waste.

1/3 green or soft waste
Greens, making up one-third of the mix, are fresh organic matter rich in nitrogen and carbon: grass clippings, weeds, fruit and vegetable peels, wilted flowers, eggshells, and plant-based meal leftovers. Do not add food scraps such as meat, fish, or shellfish, or ashes.

2/3 brown or hard waste
Browns, making up two-thirds of the mix, are dried organic matter that mainly supplies the carbon microorganisms need, plus a little nitrogen: coffee grounds, dead branches, wood shavings/chips, dried plants, dead leaves, and cardboard cut into small pieces.

Your questions about the Rotating composter 180L

The farm's answers to the questions our customers ask us most often.

The 180L rotating composter is our most compact dual-chamber model, ideal for a smaller household or a medium-sized yard. Our customers find it very easy to turn with its crank handle.

For a family of about 4 people with chickens, or with lots of yard waste, go for our 245L, which also works with the EASY-TURN handle.

No, the 180L rotating composter doesn't need worms: it works without composting worms. Microorganisms (bacteria and fungi) in the waste do the work of breaking it down. The turning and the heat that can build up in the drum aren't suitable for worms, and the environment would be too wet for them.

If you'd like to get things going faster, add a little Bokashi activator along with your very first scraps.

All our tips: Worm composter or traditional composter: which solution should you choose for your waste?

The ideal companion for the 180L rotating composter is our 14.5-gallon (55-liter) compost collection cart: it slides under the drum to collect the finished compost and the leachate, then rolls right over to your vegetable garden. Other useful extras:

  • our Bokashi Activator, to add with your very first scraps to help get things started;
  • a kitchen compost pail (Urbalive 3.7L, Urbalive 6L, Kaylis 7L, or Maze 9L) to collect food scraps in the kitchen.

The EASY-TURN handle, however, only fits the 245 L model.

Yes, several customers say the 180L rotating composter is easy to assemble. It comes as a kit with detailed instructions, in which each part is labeled with a letter, plus an assembly video.

Missing or damaged part? Send us an email with a photo and the part's letter, and we'll ship it to you. Once the composter is up and running, retighten the nuts and bolts from time to time.

Yes! The drum of the 180L rotating composter is made of UV-treated high-density plastic that stands up to the weather, and its corrosion-resistant metal frame is coated with zinc powder. As for mixing, our customers agree: turning it with the crank handle is "child's play."

It comes with a 2-year warranty from Moutta Farm, and we have replacement parts available (crank handle, pins, axle, etc.). Just email us with the letter of the part shown in the instructions.

For the 180L rotating composter, the rule is: 2/3 brown material to 1/3 green waste. Browns: cardboard cut into small pieces, egg cartons, paper towels, dead leaves, coffee grounds, and untreated wood shavings. Greens: peels, wilted flowers, grass clippings, eggshells, and plant-based leftovers.

Adjust the ratio with the seasons: half and half in winter, and 70% dry material in summer, when fruit is juicier. Avoid meat, fish, shellfish, and ashes. Bones and seashells are too hard to compost. You'll find the full list on the last page of the 180L instructions.

All our tips: Worm composter or traditional composter: which is right for your food scraps?

With the 180L (47.6-gallon) rotating composter, it takes 2 to 6 months on average. It all depends on the temperature and what you add, and biological activity slows down considerably in winter.

The secret of the 180L is its two chambers: fill the first one, then let it mature without adding anything while you fill the second. If you add scraps to the same chamber every day, it will take longer to mature. There's no need to turn it every day. A few regular turns are enough.

The 180L has no spigot, so the liquid drains out from underneath the drum. To collect it, place a tray or our 14.5-gallon (55 L) collection cart underneath, then dilute it at 1 part liquid to 10 parts water for watering. A lot of liquid is a sign that you need more cardboard.

It's best to set up the 180L rotating composter sheltered from the rain, with the filling openings facing downward. One customer recommends a roof or a cover so that water doesn't collect in the ridges of the drum.

I've only been using it for about 6 weeks, but the process has gone very quickly from when I filled it until it's almost finished. The plan is to have soil by spring so the plants can get a strong start with this nutrient-rich compost soil. Even though it was a bit fiddly to put together, it was reasonably easy and quick.

Composter's strengths: Rodent-proof

Very easy to use overall. My compost no longer serves as a rat nest, which was the goal. I still need to learn how to better balance the dry and green parts.

Assembly / setup: EasyTime to your first finished compost: Not harvested yetComposter's strengths: Easy turning

Fast delivery, very easy assembly with a well-detailed instruction manual. As soon as it was assembled, I was able to fill it with compost that was already maturing (maturation not finished) and start a new batch in the second compartment. Can't wait to see the result in a few weeks/months! Turning it with the crank is child's play, not difficult at all.

Making compost in a rotating plastic drum is not a given! Indeed, the daily addition of green waste lengthens the decomposition time of the part being used. So you necessarily have to use the other half of the composter before you get compost in x weeks. Also, it is advisable to shelter this composter from the rain with a roof or a cover, to prevent the grooves of the drum from filling up and becoming a mosquito breeding ground.

We didn't have time to set it up before going back to Paris for the winter. We hope to come back down to Saône-et-Loire in April 2024 and will start assembling it.
